California Pioneers New Workforce Models

Registered Dental Hygienists in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) are licensed registered dental hygienists with specialized training that allow them to practice in settings outside of the traditional dental office. RDHAPs have been shown over the past 20 years to practice safely and effectively, and they have a long-standing and established commitment to working with underserved populations including low income, disabled, elderly and children. This study, which was published in Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, discusses how, with the registered dental hygienist in alternative practice, California remains ahead of the curve in expanding the roles of dental hygienists.
