Leadership Alum Wins Humanitarian Award

Vincent Nguyen, DO, CMD, who graduated from our California Health Care Foundation Leadership Program in September, has won the 2016 Senior Care Hero Humanitarian Award.

Nguyen serves as program director of CARES, a palliative service at HOAG Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, California. In this role he helps patients and families navigate end-of-life care.

According to his patients and colleagues, he has the ability to put himself in others’ shoes, listen to where they’re coming from, and try and make it better, according to Jacqueline Dupont, a gerontologist based in Orange County, California. “If it’s pain he addresses it immediately. He just has that intuitive empathy where he picks up on everything,” she said.

Nguyen stepped in to oversee the care of Gwyn Parry’s wife at HOAG Hospital during the last days of her life. “She was having a very difficult time of it,” Parry said. “Dr. Nguyen took over and just relieved her of all of her concerns, her discomfort and the anxiety of my family. And for that, I am eternally grateful.”

Presented on October 15 at a gala in Anaheim, proceeds from the awards event benefit seniors in need through the safety net programs offered by SeniorServ, a non-profit organization in Orange County. Learn more about Nguyen’s impact, story and view his acceptance speech in this video from the Senior Care Hero Awards:
