For the first time, the Legislature has charged the state’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development with establishing a clearinghouse of data about California’s health care workforce. Such a coordinated effort could mean that policy makers will have good, solid information on which to base their decisions. This report outlines several examples of current data collection efforts. Similarities and differences among California’s boards and between California and other states are also explored. In addition, common challenges are raised and possible ways to address those challenges are proposed. California is poised to initiate its own system and can benefit from the lessons learned and successful models in the well-established programs elsewhere.
