Aoife McDermott, Ph.D., was a 2022-23 U.K. Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice at UC Berkeley, during which time she edited the Research Handbook on Contemporary Human Resource Management for Health Care (Edward Elgar, 2024). She is professor of human resource management at Aston University (Cardiff at the time of her Fellowship), maintains affiliate faculty status at UC Berkeley, and is collaborating with colleagues at Healthforce and the Institute for Policy Studies at UCSF. Her work focuses on the employment relationships, wellbeing, retention, and workforce management in health and social care, including current collaborations examining peer support worker roles in behavioral health, and leader preparedness for AI adoption, examined through the case of AI scribes. A committed teacher, she was founding program director of the M.Sc./Diploma in health care planning, commissioned by the Welsh Government and NHS Wales to provide a talent pipeline in this space. McDermott previously coordinated the multidisciplinary Cardiff Health Organization and Policy Studies (CHOPS) research group and held trustee and officer roles for the Learned Society for Studies in Organizing Healthcare. She has twice organized the society's biennial International Organizational Behavior in Healthcare Conference, and edited book and special issue collections produced from these meetings. She serves as Independent Chair of the Leicestershire Health Determinants Research Collaboration (NIHR-funded) and is a member of the NHS Pharmacy Research Advisory Group. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, McDermott was a Trinity Scholar, awarded a gold medal, and completed her Ph.D. as a Government of Ireland Research Scholar. She is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
