As health care in California continues to experience major changes and challenges, it is important to periodically check the pulse of one key group of participants in this system: the state’s physicians. This report presents the results from the 2001/2002 UCSF California Physician Survey. The report also includes comments made by physicians attending focus groups in the state to enrich the survey data with more qualitative information. This original survey and focus group data are presented regarding trends in practice setting, physician organization, managed care involvement, Medi-Cal participation, practice protocols, earnings, and physicians' overall experience of the practice climate in California.
