Policy at Healthforce

Logo of Policy at Healthforce

Policy at Healthforce is a focused body of work at Healthforce Center at UCSF that aims to influence policy changes in California to promote greater health workforce diversity and expanded economic opportunities for communities. Our vision and design for this effort are guided by values of social justice to move from structures of exclusion and disparity to a future state marked by structures of inclusion and equity.

At the center of this work is a community-informed research and policy agenda that drives the health workforce policy priorities of Policy at Healthforce. It is dynamic and responsive to stated needs and priorities of communities and partners across the state.

Current priorities

The community-informed areas of focus for research and policy projects include:

  • Laying the foundation for health workforce policy efforts: Products that summarize, synthesize, or curate existing information to establish foundational health workforce knowledge.
  • Accessing actionable health workforce data: Resources and tools to support effective use of existing health workforce data.
  • Ensuring equitable integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with the health workforce: Short- and longer-term projects that aim to identify, understand, and advance policy issues related to the use of AI in the training and workplaces of health workers – with a focus on non-clinical, unlicensed, and less credentialed roles.
  • Increasing health workforce retention: Projects that explore increasing retention by creating and sustaining high quality jobs and reducing inequities for health workers.
  • Emerging issues: Responsive projects to meet evolving needs in a dynamic policy landscape.
